Pick A Theme

The first step in planning your movie night is to choose a theme. Do you want the night to be all about the funniest comedies, the most romantic love stories, or the scariest horror films? Choosing the theme will help you narrow down the movies you will be screening.

Choose The Movie

Choose a movie or series of movies that go along with the theme. You can have a movie marathon by choosing a movie trilogy or franchise. Start the party early enough so that you can watch either all or the best of the movie franchise. Here are some suggestions for movies in different genres:

Comedy- Rush Hour 1, Rush Hour 2, Rush Hour 3
Horror- Final Destination series. IT, Insidious and more
Action- Fast and Furious series, Pirates of the Caribbean series
Fantasy- Harry Potter series

You can also choose a television series and watch the entire season in back-to-back episodes. Some great television series that will make a great marathon include Entourage, Gilmore Girls, Scandal, Grey's Anatomy, and Glee.

Movie Theme Party Supplies

These can easily be found in any party store. Amazon has a good range of products for a movie night party. From invitations to decorations, from plates and napkins to goody boxes, the shop has them all.

Purchasing party supplies from a party store is hassle-free and can save you time, but it can be expensive. To save cost, make the invitations and some decorations yourself. Clapboards make great invitations for a movie party. For decorations, hang different colored stars on the ceiling. You can easily make them out of cardstock paper and scissors.

Movie Party Decorations

Hang a banner on the front of your house that says: 'Welcome to (your name)'s Blockbuster Bash'. Then spread a red carpet (if you don't have one, hire one) from the front door to the party area. Have someone ready with a camera on the carpet. Take pictures of your guests as they arrive. Print the photos and give them as party favors.

Serve Traditional Movie Snacks

It is best to keep a movie party as close to reality as possible. Don't serve fancy foods, as no one eats fancy foods in movies. Serve popcorn, candies, ice cream, and soft drinks. If you want to have a birthday cake, ask your baker to decorate it with movie theme stuff or have one that is shaped like a clapboard.

A good idea is to have a snack buffet at your party. Set up a table with a tablecloth that matches the rest of your decorations. For a centerpiece, bake cupcakes and arrange them on a stand. Fill some jars with candies, chocolates, and popcorn. Buy some popcorn bags and have them ready for your guests to fill with their snacks. If you want to go all the way, prepare ice cream in different flavors, complete with choices of toppings, so your guests can make their own sundaes.

You want your guests to feel as if they are really at the movies, so make sure that you have all of the essential snacks. Here is a list of snacks and beverages you should have at your party:

  • Popcorn
  • Chips and dip
  • Cookies
  • Chocolate
  • Candy
  • Fresh fruit and vegetables
  • Soda
  • Juice
  • Water

Make The Seating Area Comfortable

Since you and your guests will be sitting (or lying down) for a long period of time, make sure that you have enough room for your guests to be comfortable. Place plenty of blankets, sheets, and pillows around the area where your guests will be watching the movie. If you have ample floor space (that is carpeted), move any unused furniture to the side and lay soft blankets and pillows on the floor for your guests who want to lie down while watching the movie.

Take it Outdoor

If you have a backyard big enough to fit you and your guests, then it is a great idea to take your movie party outdoor. All that is needed are an LCD screen, a projector, a laptop computer, and of course the movie you are going to watch. The LCD screen can be swapped with a white tablecloth or sheet and a projector can be hired at a minimal cost. Connect the laptop to the projector (instructions will be available in the projector's packaging) and show the movie on the big LCD screen. Spread a rug or carpet on the lawn. Have some pillows and blankets ready for your guests to enjoy.

More Tips

Tip #1: Clean up the house the night before or the morning of the party. Make sure that the party area is neat and tidy and the area where the food will be placed is clean.

Tip #2: Have the DVDs ready to go ahead of time so that you won't be searching for them during the party. If the movies or television shows you are watching will be on TV that night, be sure to check the time they are playing.

Tip #3: Set the atmosphere by dimming the lights or turning them off completely. If you choose to turn the lights off, keep at least one light on in the distance so that your guests can still find their way to the bathroom.

Tip #4: Keep the food and snacks nearby. It will become an annoyance if your guests have to travel all the way to the kitchen each time they need a refill of their snacks or drinks.

Tip #5: Choose movies that all of your guests are comfortable with. You might like horror films, but it might make some of your guests uncomfortable.

What movie lover wouldn't love to have a star-studded party in his or her honor? If you dream of making it big in Hollywood or just enjoy watching the big screen, then there is no better choice than hosting a movie party for your celebration.
